Granted, these events are still not as popular as, say video poker or slot tournaments, but they are nevertheless much sought after as an entertaining and profitable twist to the game of roulette. Some sites will offer roulette tournaments for free, but not too often. Everybody in the tournament receives the same number of chips to begin with, although some casinos allow re-buys.

There is no format for the number of people allowed to take part in an online roulette tournament. In some cases, they could number a few hundred, while in the very popular tournaments, they could even reach as high as several thousand.

Each roulette table consists of around 20 players and you can keep track of your progress amongst all these players in the tournament by checking the leaderboard to see where you stand in real time.

The most common format for an online roulette tournament is based on rounds. The winner of the round, as well as the tournament, is determined by the highest number of chips. In the first few rounds, the top two players from each round at each roulette table will progress to the next round, where they will take on the top two players from the other tables, and so forth.

There is no hard and fast rule about how many rounds an online roulette competition should consist of, but it can safely be said that in the second last round, only one winner from each table will go up to the final table.

There is no doubt that online roulette tournaments can be loads of fun but not all tournaments suit every type of player. It is imperative that you ask yourself several questions before signing up for the competition, such as whether the time and date suits you, whether the minimum and maximum bets are in line with the size of your bankroll and whether the prize being offered is worth the effort of playing.
