Visa Electron is a debit or credit card available across most of the world (with the exception of Canada, Australia, Ireland and the United States).
The card was introduced by VISA in the eighties and is a sister card to the Visa Debit card. The difference between Visa Electron and Visa Debit is that payments with Visa Electron require that all the funds be available at the time of transfer, i.e., Visa Electron card accounts may not be overdrawn. Visa Debit cards, on the other hand, allow transfers exceeding available funds up to a certain limit.
Some online stores and all off-line terminals (like on trains and aircraft) do not support Visa Electron because their systems cannot check for the availability of funds[1].

What is a debit card?
A debit card (sometimes referred as a bank card or check card) provides an alternative payment method to cash when making purchases. Functionally, it can be called an electronic cheque, as the funds are withdrawn directly from either the bank account, or from the remaining balance on the card. In some cases, the cards are designed exclusively for use on the Internet thus no physical plastic card (as we know it) exist.
Debit cards may also allow for instant withdrawal of cash from ATM machines. Merchants may also offer a cash-back facilities to customers, where a customer can withdraw cash along with their purchase[2].
What is a credit card?
A credit card is a small plastic card issued to users to use as a payment option replacing cash. It allows buying goods and services based on the promise of the card holder to pay for these goods and services. The issuer of the card grants a line of credit to the user (card holder) from which he/she can borrow money for payment.
A credit card is different from a charge card: a charge card requires the balance to be paid in full each month. In contrast, credit cards allow the consumers a continuing balance of debt, subject to interest being charged.
Most credit cards are issued by banks or credit unions, and are the shape and size specified by the ISO/IEC 7810 standard as ID-1. This is defined as 85.60 × 53.98 mm (3.370 × 2.125 in) (33/8 × 21/8 in) in size[3].
